FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT.
BIRKENHEAD TO IXSTAL BOXES. After deliberations extending over several months as to the respective merits of a series of fire-boxes and the more costly provision of a fire brigade, the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening adopted the former policy, and referred to a committee the duty of recommending the positions for the respective fire-boxes. Each box will contain hydrant, length of hose and nozzle, and coupling, and the cost is estimated te £40. Reporting to the Borough Council last evening, Mr. W. B. Darlow said the committee had interviewed Superintendent Wilson, of the Auckland Fire Brigade, who appeared to agree that the fire-boxes were adapted towards preventing the spread of fire. To house a hard-reel at the corner of Seddon Road woud cost £100. But would that be as effective as a means of fire-fighting as placing equipment at various points, euch as the wharf, Highbury, and Roseberry Avenue? Hβ took it for granted that the provision of an up-to-date fire brigade was financially out of the question at present. Five boxes, with 300 feet of hose, hydrants, couplings, and nozzles, would cost £200. These would provide a reasonable means of utting out a fire at a minimum of expense. The location of the fire-boxes will in all probability be decided at the next meeting.
