VAN IN FLAMES.
MUTER JUMPS CLEAR.
MAIL AND DOCUMENTS SAVED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, this day. A miraculous escape from death was experienced by Mr. Friday Olsen late yesterday afternoon when, while returning from Omatane to Taihape, a butcher's Tan stalled on McArtin's Hill. While he was endeavouring to restart the benzine from a faulty connection, ignited by a hot engine, caused the van to burst into flames. Mr. Olsen barely had time to jump lear, and although in great danger he rescued the mail and other documents of value. In a short time the vehicle was a mass of flames, and the brake linings were burnt, thus releasing the brakes, which caused the car to career backwards for a few yards. Leaving the road it crashed into a fence 30ft below the road.
The van, which is owned by Mr. S. S. limbs, batcher, is a total lose. Mr. Olsen, the driver, who was the only occupant, miraculously escaped serious injury, and suffered only from burns, shock and minor abrasions.
