"LAW AND ORDER."

SCHOOL COMMITTEE ACTION.

DABAA.VXLX.E lreiqwjin RESIGN.

ADEQUACY OF GRANT CHALLENGED.

"If they had a knowledge of business, a sense of responsibility and respect for law and order, they would not act a» they are doing. They cannot get their own way, and eo they resign." Thia statement was made by Mr. J. Boddie at this morning's meeting of the Auckland Education Board, when a letter was received from the Dargaville school committee tendering their resignation and stating that the credit balance in hand was inadequate to meet wages for cleaning to the end of the year. The financial statement forwarded showed outstanding accounts amounting to £117. A rate demand from the borough council of £39 was also sent. The credit balance at bank was £6 13/6. Mr. R. Hoe thought the committee should be asked to reconsider its decision. He criticised the allowances made to district high schools as compared to large secondary schools in the cities. There was discrimination in favour of the latter. Any advantage should be in favour of district high schools. The board had given assistance to district high schools in the past to enable them to carry on.

The chairman said he did not think the Dargaville committee realised their responsibilities. They had exceeded the schedule. The rate demand was a matter for the board and not for the committee. After a desultory discussion it was decided to write to the committee pointing out that their resignations could not be accepted while there was a liability to be met and that the matter would be held over until the board's accountant visited Dargaville and made a report on the position. Mr. E. C. Banks gave notice of motion to the effect that the board consider the question of the allowances granted to district high schools and secondary schools.
