RECENT CONFERENCE.

The International Conference on Cancer has just published a complete classified report embodying all the papers read at its proceedings. Professor Archibald Leitch, director of the research institute of the Caneer Hospital, London, in a summing-up says:— "The chief development of knowledge was contained in the paper read by Dr. James Ewing, of New York, in which he insisted that cancer must be regarded as a group of diseases. All the foremost authorities agreed that cancer was sot due to a single invariable causal agent. "One paper finally disposed of. the prevalent idea that the Jewish nee is less prone to cancer than others. "Within a few years the perfection of radium technique has achieved such triumphs that the development of tM» treatment is the cry of the day. Larger quantities of radium are urgently needed. The discussions failed to reveal support for the lead treatment. Blood tests were only successful in diagnosing cancer in 75 per cent of the cases and were unreliable in more obscure cases. "However, radiographic methods for detecting cancer of the stomach, have been most usefuL The tendency in the future will be to operate on the stomach lesions before they develop cancer.
