(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

There was only a fair attendance for the first day of the Whangarei Racing Club's spring meeting at Kensington Park, when the new stand was officially opened. The other conditions were perfect, fine weather and a fast track. The totalisator handled £14,399, compared with £18,904 on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £4505.

The earlier winners were Mussie (Spring Plate), Vallar (Kensington Hack), Ripon Abbey (Hurdles), and Desert Glow (Cup). After the big race, the Gold Cup donated by Mr. W. J. Byrne was presented to Mr. D. R. Walker, owner of the winner, by Mrs. R. G. Hosking, wife of the president. The miniature gold cup donated by Mr. R. G. Hosking was presented to the winning trainer, F. E. Loomb, by Mr. L. Nelson.

It was an even betting race with Kildeer ( £448), Exalted ( £324) and Kawainga ( £321) carrying most support. Fiery Lad, Kildeer and Sunny Morn were in front when the field had settled down and along the back Fiery Lad was showing the way to Sunny Morn, Kildeer, Kawainga and Exalted. Sunny Morn took charge crossing the top and led into the straight from Fiery Lad, Kawainga and Blue Bonnet, with Exalted next. Sunny Morn finished on in good style and defeated Exalted by one length and three-quarters, with Kawainga half-a-length further back. There were only six starters in the Hikurangi Hack race, and Mosque was elected favourite, carrying £483, the next in the order of betting being Bombarder (£463) and Nassock (£383). Brampton and Segment were first to break the line from Illingar, Bombarder, Nassock and Mosque. Racing across the top, Brampton and Illingar were on terms, with Bombarder, Mosque, Segment and Nassock next. As they turned in the straight, Bombarder moved up behind Brampton and Illingar, with Mosque and Nassock handy. Bombarder finished on gamely under prasure. and defeated Brampton by a heacQPwith Mosque a further three-quarters of a length away. Nassock, Illingar, and Segment followed. The Sprinters. The field for the Manaia Handicap was the smallest of the day, five runners only going to the post. Awarere was solidly backed, carrying £784, with Tea Time ( £493) and Oration and Ballymoy 11. each entrusted with £138. Awarere, Serang, Tea Time, Ballymoy 11. and Oration was the order when the field were fairly on the journey.
