SEVERE FLOODS.
DAMAGE IN MANAWATU.
BANKS AVERT DISASTER.
LARGE AREA INUNDATED.
(By Telegraph.—Free* Association.)
PALMERSTON N., Sunday.
The flood waters in the Manawatu district between Tiakitahuna and Rangiotu are now abating. Had the Oroua River burst its banks higher up there would have been a disastrous and unprecedented flood covering the whole of the Kairanga district. The stopbanks constructed after the flood of two years ago held, thus averting an overflow. The railway line through the Manawatu Gorge is now clear. Trains resumed running yesterday morning. Between 5000 and 10,000 acres of farm lands were inundated by the flood, which has ruined spring pasture and caused farmers severe loss and setback. The flood is still receding, but it will be some days before the Rangiotu district is clear.
