Backers Start Badly.

Bui Soon Get Their Own Back.

(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

The four days' spring carnival of the Canterbury Jockey Club opened in fine weather on a fast track at Riccarton, before a very large attendance. The chief attraction to-day is the New Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap double. The Derby will be run on Monday, the Oaks and Canterbury Cup on Wednesday, and the G. G. Stead Gold Cnp on Saturday. Nukumai was a strong favourite for the Spring Hurdles, carrying nearly twice as much as Dian's Lad, who was second choice. Diana's Lad led over the first hurdle from Beaumont and Nine of Spades. Passing the- stand Nine of Spades joined Diana's Lad in the lead, and they were still showing the way at Cutts', with Beaumont and Troilus next. Going along the back Troilus moved up. At the six furlong post Diana's Lad was three lengths in front of Troilus and Beaumont, with Nine of Spades dropping back and Nukumai improving his position. Diana's Lad and Beaumont were joined in the lead by Carinthia half a mile from home, with Nukumai next. Beaumont led over the last hurdle and, stalling off a challenge from Nukumai, won by three-quarters of a length. Carinthia was four lengths away, with Troilus two lengths further back. More Than Half Forfeit Engagement. . ;ln a field of ten in the Spring Plate Mendip and Teri were best backed, with Sarnia, Cashier and Roscrea also well favoured. Teri and Cashier were smart-1 est out, with Mooregas a©d Bonrose i next. At the six furlong post Bonrose and Teri were showing three lengths clear of Cashier, with Mendip handy. Boirose retired at the home turn. Teri and, Cashier led Mendip to the straight. Mendip was in front at the distance, and won easily by two lengths from Cashier. Sarnia was half-a length away, finishing strongly after a slow start. Mooregas and Teri close up. Another Favourite Rolls Home. Corset iere and Bank Draft got away badly. Silver Rule and Denier were first to show out, with Bed Heckle and Panther next, while a little further on Nightmarch joined in. Silver Rule and Denier lead Red Heckle and Nightmarch round the home turn, where Bank Draft was also handy. After making up a lot of ground Denier retired when the straight was reached. A little further on Red Heckle and Nightmarch drew away together, Nightmarch winning by half a length. Five lengths away came Camisader with Tembroney, Freeze Out and Desert Lad next.
