IS Liberals 11 24 Independents 10 40 A feature of the elections was the rejection of the Communist candidates. Only 27 votes were recorded for them at Bradford, 32 at Blackburn, and 11U at Wolverhampton. The Labour gains were mostly in the industrial centres. Labour's biggest success was at Liverpool, where the party had 11 gains, yet it secured the control of only one council, namely, that of Swindon. Mr. Corbey, Labour Mayor of Salford, who refused to wear a top hat in his year of office or to attend church on Mayors' Sunday, was defeaed by 100 votes. Six unemployed men were candidates for the Southwark Council. They secured only 252 votes among them.
