CAREFUL CRICKET.
MELBOURNE MATCH.
M.C.C. 248 For Three In Six
Hours.
JARDINE'S SLOW CENTURY.
MELBOURNE, November 2. The cricket match, England v. Victoria, was continued at Melbourne to-day. The weather was bright and the wicket in perfect order. When stumps were drawn yesterday the Victorians had lost nine wickets for 103 runs, Woodfull (00) and Ironmonger (1G) being the not out men. Woodfull had only added a single to the score this morning when Ironmonger was dismissed in the first over, Hendren making a grand running catch near the fence. Woodfull had carried his bat throughout the innings, a rare feat. England's first innings was commenced at 12.20 p.m., Hobbs and Jardine opening the batting. Although they were steady they seldom flattered the bowlers, who were very accurate. At one stage Hobbs and his partner made only six runs in six overs. Jardine batted stylishly. The pair brought up the total to 50 in 71 minutes and knocked twelve runs off Ironmonger in nine overs. When Hobbs had made 45 he was badly missed at cover point by Scaife off Ironmonger. Hobbs was below par. In two hours he only hit three fours. Jardine made 50 in 150 minutes. In all, Hobbs gave four chances. Two were very difficult ones off Blackie, one of them to that bowler and the other to the wicket-keeper, Ellis. Mead hit three boundaries off Hartkopf in one over. Then he and Jardine played a defensive game and the spectators became a little impatient. Mead's innings*lasted 78 minutes during which he made 37, including five fours. Hendren played bright cricket and scored at a rate of one run a minute. Jardine's century was compiled in 247 minutes. He went out ten minutes before stumps were drawn. He had hit six fours and had played slow but stylish cricket. Hendren gave a nice display for 50 not out. He batted for an hour and hit six fours. Details of the scores are:— VICTORIA.—First Innings.
