BUSINESS MEN WANTED.
MR. ASSERTIOH.
SEVERAL RUMOURS REFUTED,
"I am not in any way opposed to racing permits being granted as a source of amusement for people of the district concerned, but I am opposed to the transferring of those permits to the cities, as that sort of thing disorganises business, and deprives the country people of the pleasure to which they are entitled." That statement was made last night by Mr. J. B. DonaM, United candidate for Auckland East, in refuting a misreported statement which had appeared in an Auckland newspaper.
Mr. Donald, who spoke in St. Andrew's Hall to a large and appreciative audience, over which Major T. P. Halpin presided, said that opponents had endeavoured to make political capital out of a statement that his firm advertised for Hindu labour. Mr. Donald emphatically denied the truth of that statement, explaining the circumstances which had given rise to its circulation. The firm had no knowledge of the insertion of the advertisement. This had been fullyexplained, but it seemed that his opponents were bent on making capital out of it.
The candidate was at some pains to deny that he was a member of the City Council.
In conclusion, Mr. Donald asked the electors to return a business man to Parliament. If the affairs of the country were to be conducted on businesslike lines, there must be more men of ■sound commercial experience in the House of Representatives.
A unanimous vote of thanks and con Jdence was carried.
