TOFTTA MANNED.
SEAMEN WITHDRAW DEMANDS.
Acting on the advice of the central union authority at Wellington, the Auckland seamen decided yesterday afternoon to relinquish the demand for extra stokers on the Union Company's steamer Tofua. A crew was signed on the vessel yesterday afternoon, and she sailed for the Islands this morning. The dispute arose over the practice of dispatching the vessel from Auckland with one of her four boilers cut out. On the return voyage the fourth boiler is used, and extra Islanders are signed on at Suva as stokers. These men are paid off at Auckland and taken back as passengers. The local seamen asked that the vessel should carry enough men to fire all four boilers; and some of them also suggested that an all-white crew should be demanded. After discussing the renly from the Wellington office yesterdav afternoon, however, they consented to waive their demands.
