EXAMINATION ERROR.

WRONG PAPERS ISSUED.

COMPUCATED POSITION.

QUESTION OF VALIDITY.

A somewhat complicated position has arisen through the issuing of the wrong history paper to Auckland student* sittin~ for the second stage for degrees and diplomas under the annual examinations of the University of New Zealand. , Candidates in history were to have received paper A on entering the examination room. The papers were all on the desks when the doors were opened, but when the candidates took their seats thev discovered they had paper B before them. This dealt with another period of the subject. It was pointed out that these papers should not have been issued until Monday normng. The wrappers in which the papers were received were examined, and it was found that thev were labelled "paper A." It was eventually decided that the candidates, having seen the papers, would have to work upon them, and this course was adopted. At the conclusion of the three-hour period prescribed for the examination all papers containing questions were collected, and candidates were not allowed to take them from the room. The mistake has already been reported to the registrar of the University of New Zealand, but it has not yet been decided whether the examination in pape: B will be allowed as valid. The candidates are naturally concerned, as in the ordinary course of events they would have had a clear three days extra in which to prepare for paper B.
