Aussie went a great race in the Avoca Handicap, but weight told its tale over the hnal stages, and in a hard finish he went under to Lady's Boy, to whom he was conceding nearly two stone and a half.

Currajong displayed speed in his initial race at the Dargaville meeting and gives the impression that he will do better later on. He is a neat looking colt and should be improved with the race.

Vallar was produced in the Tokttoka Handicap at Avondale yesterday, and was prominent all the way. Half-way down the straight he looked as though he would win, but just failed to stay Sn over the last bit, finishing fourth. His turn should not be far off.

The Absurd—Bronze three-year-old Envoy displayed promising form by finishing third in the second division of the Maiden Plate yesterday. Lie is still big in condition and. is likely to improve a good deal with a bit more racing.

By finishing, second to Carl Idem in the Nursery Handicap, Gemlight put up a creditable showing, considering tlie short time he has been in commission. He is a solid looking youngster that is sure to improve with racing experience.

The. Pukekohe-trained Haviland, a three-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey from Midget, shaped well in the second division of the Maiden Plate, and was out making the pace until his condition gave out. He should be capable of paying his way later on in the season.

Template ran a surprisingly good race in the Awakino Handicap, and was always in the firing line, eventually finishing in fourth position. This gelding has shown jumping ability on several occasions and will be raced over hurdles later on in the season.

Little Gift was left at the start of the Tokatoka Handicap, but made up her ground quickly coming across the top, •nd was well up as they turned for home. She, however, failed to sustain her effort in the straight. When she leaves the mark properly she should be .hard to dispose of.

Royal Doulton won the Dargaville Cup yesterday in good style. She was always one of the leaders, and, taking .charge in the straight, won well. This mare showed last season that she would win good races, and by the manner in which she accounted for those opposed to her yesterday she will be hard to ibe«s in more select company.

iHsxriculus came from a long way back -in the Hobson Handicap yesterday to get (Ceoond money. She was last as they ran ■down the back, but put in a great run in ■the straight, and looked as though she *night beat Lomint a few yards from the post, but the latter was just a bit too jgood for her..

The Begum had her first race this eeason when she contested the open six furlong event at the Dargaville meeting yesterday. She showed pace over the early stages but failed to see the journey out. She will be racing , at the Takapuna meeting at the end of the present month and should be an improved filly by the time that meeting takes place.

Catapult, who won the Tokatoka Handicap at Avondale yesterday, showed promising form a couple of seaoons ago when he beat Royal Doulton and others in the Trial Handicap at the Waikato meeting. He ran third in his first start in the Vauxhall Handicap at Takapuna last season, but after that failed to get into the money. Cataplut is one of R. Hail's team at Fapatoetoe.

Carl Idem showed a lot of speed when he ran second to First Money in the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie last month. He was not started again till yesterday, when he was well supported for the Nursery Handicap at Avondale. He came from a good way back, and galloped over everything in the straight to win nicely.

In 1827 Lomint won the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie, and that was her last appearance that season. Laet season she only started on four occasions, without getting Into the money. She has been raced on a similar number of occasions this season, and yesterday annexed the Hobson Handicap at Avondale, which is her first victory since scoring in the Cornwall. She was always handy, and when tackled by Auriculus in the straight stayed on gamely.

Valcon was fairly well back when the field reached the turn out of the straight in the Dargaville Cup yesterday, but his rider was at him and raced him at top around his field on the bend, so that when they straightened up •'?»**»? back he was second, and-occupied that position till the straight wm reached.
