BIG CRICKET.

ENGLISHMEN'S DEBUT.

Closing Stages Of Innings Full

Of Incident.

CHAPMAN CHEERED.

PERTH, October 19.

The English cricketers to-day resumed their match in fine weather against Western Australia. When stumps were drawn yesterday the visitors had made 306 runs for the loss of six wickets, Hendren (55) and Ames (3) being the not out men.

Adopting vigorous tactics, in contrast to their opening day's play, the visitors added 100 runs in 75 minutes.

The game was full of incident for the several thousand spectators. England had been dismissed at the luncheon interval for 406. The total was compiled in six hours four minutes, mostly since tea time yesterday.

Hendren just missed his century after having given a sparkling display attended by some lucky escapes. He was [batting two hours 20 minutes.

Chapman, the left-handed captain of the Englishmen, opened his innings vigorously. He made 26 runs in 30 minutes. He was dismissed through taking a chance in attempting to make a big hit. He received an ovation.

Ames, a careful, sound batsman, took 71 minutes to score 36 runs.

The bowling in the afternoon was interesting, six of the visitors taking the ball in turn. Leyland and Hammond made the chief impression. Leyland is a clever slow "googly" bowler, who puzzles the batsmen.

Hammond has plenty of sting and a good twist. White secured wickets, but seasoned batsmen should have no difficulty in pasting him. Geary concentrated on strong, long hops with plenty of paee.

Jardine, in a short turn with the ball, secured a wicket. He showed a pretty twist and a good length, but not much spin. The English bowling strength apparently is better and -re than that of the last team, though nothing exceptional has yet been shown.

The Western Australian youths stood up well to the bowling but-did not take chances. Their score about equalled that- of England at the same stage of the innings. A feature of the Englishmen's first innings was the bowling of Evans, who secured the wickets of Ley land, Hammond and Chapman for 82 runs. Details of the scores are:— ENGLAND. —First Innings. FOUR WICKETS TO OXENHAtt

MELBOURNE, October 19.

The match between Australia and The Rest, was begun to-day. The wicket was slow and easy, and the outfield slow. Richardson won the toss and The Rest batted first. As Ryder was ill, Scaife was included. Gregory bowled at a good pace, but the wicket was unsuitable for him.

There was much dreary batting. O'Connor was in for 140 minutes, and Kelleway for one hour. The first 100 runs were scored in 160 minutes, and the total, 111, in three hours.

The bowling was good, but more than one batsman committed suicide. Ponsford was missed off Scott after scoring a single. Ponsford and Hendry were both confident and batted well.

There were three adjournments latr; in the day owing to light showers, during which the wicket was covered. Stumps were drawn at 5.40 p.m., owing to the bad light.

For Australia Oxenham took four wickets for 28, Grimmett three for 29, Gregory two for 26.

Australia have lost one wicket for 90 runs (Hendry 45, Ponsford 44 not out, Andrews 1 not out). Seott took one wicket for 31. The scores are:— THE REST.—First Innings.
