SOLDIERLY ADVICE.
Hindenburg's Address To His
Cavalry.
NEW METHODS OF DEFENCE.
("Times" Cables.)
LONDON, October 19.
The Berlin correspondent of the "Times" reports that President Hindenburg, being unable to attend the opening of a new cavalry school in Hanover, sent a message. In this he laid emphasis upon the importance of cavalry in the present German Army.
The President urged the officers to set an example to the men by sure and resolute leadership. "Regard your men a", a precious trust confided in yon by the Fatherland," he said. "Be proud of. your profession. Above all, keep the shield of your honour clean. Its purest metal is love for Cnd loyalty to our sorely-tried Fatherland."
German military opinion usually maintains that the quota of cavalry in the present German Army, as prescribed by the Treaty of Versailles, is disproportionately large. Great importance, therefore, is attached to making the best use of it.
The recent manoeuvres in Upper Silesia were mainly devoted to testing new methods of using cavalry for defensive warfare.
