RACING CONFERENCE.

RE-ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE.

PROPOSED CHANGE DEFEATED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. At yesterday's special meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference, the Hawke's Bay District Committee moved: "That the motion carried at the last meeting of the conference, That, in view of the increased work required in the control of racing in New Zealand, the conference - appoints a vice-president and an executive committee consisting of the president, vice-president and Bix representatives of the conference,' be rescinded, and the following motion substituted, 'That, in view of the increased work required in the control of racing in New Zealand, the conference appoints a ▼ice-president and-an executive committee consisting of the president, vicepresident and one representative from each metropolitan district.' " The consequential amendment to the rules of racing, if the motion was carried, would, It was stated, be to interpret "executive committee" as follows: "Executive committee means a committee consisting of the president, vicepresident and one representative from each metropolitan district, who shall be elected at ■ each annual conference, or, if necessary, at a special meeting of the conference. Each metropolitan district representative must be a duly elected representative on the conference. All representatives from each metropolitan district present at the meeting of the conference shall themselves nominate one of their nnnfber on the executive

committee and except in the cases the president, and vice-president, in tte event of two or. more representatives being nominated for any particular met* ropolifan district, the conference shall elect one of such representatives, b the event of a vacancy occurring from / any cause in the number of metropolis tan district representatives on the exeeft tive committee, such acancy shall bS filled by the executive committee. Four shall form a quorum.-'

The motion was seconded by Mr. I. 9. Duncan, who mentioned that the happen* ing at the last conference was purely accidental, and was not intended aa s slight on the Auckland Bacing Club. Mr. Popplewell suggested the appointment of the two metropolitan club representatives from both the North and the South Islands, and one representative from each island to represent the country clubs.

Mr. Barrett deprecated the spirit of provincialism which seemed to be creeping into the discussion. He suggested fresh nominations and a fresh election.

In reply to Mr. Coates the chairman said that the nominations made at the last meeting did not stand. Legal authorities had given that opinion.

- After further discussion' the motion was put to the vote, 32 voting for and 14 against. As the necessary threefourths majority was not obtained, the motion was lost.

The election of the executive committee along the lines of the motion which it was sought to rescind was tlim proceeded with. The following delegates were elected:—Messrs. W. T. Haxlett (Southland), G. Gould (Canterbury), L W. Nelson (Whangarei), H. A- Russell (Hawke's Bay), A. C. Hanlon (Dunedin), and J. H. Perrett (Wanganui).
