SALE OF BUTTER.

INACCURATE STATEMENTS.

SHOPKEEPER FINED.

'If people are dealing with any product that is the subject of special regulations they should make themselves familiar with the law relating to the sale of that article," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning. Mr. Hunt imposed on E. Hellawell, of 230, Karangahape Road, • fine of £1 for making a false statement in regard to the sale of butter.

Mr. V. N. Hubble, who brought the prosecution, said the case was the first of its kind. Defendant had displayed placards in his shop window giving a wrong description of the quality of butter offered for sale, and the prosecution was intended as a warning. Counsel for defendant said the breach of the regulations occurred in August, shortly after defendant commenced to deal in bulk butter, and while he was unfamiliar with the grading marks. Mr. Hunt: Well, he should have known.

In imposing a fine Mr. Hunt said he would make the penalty merely a nominal one.
