"MIGHTY CLOSE."

NAVIGATION BY PAWNBROKER

PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC.

MAGISTRATE'S ADVICE.

"You were sailing mighty close to the wind, in dealing with parti of second-hand motor cars and launches without a second-hand dealer's license." remarked Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., to Alfred John Williams, who was charged with being an unlicensed pawnbroker. The magistrate added that it was necessary for the protection of the public that all dealers in second-hand goods should be duly licensed, as missing property could then be more easily traced. Police evidence was given that parts of a marine engine were stolen, and were found on defendant's premises. In defence, it was submitted that the parts had been left at the shop by a man who represented himself as urgently in need of money. Defendant had lent him £1, expecting to be repaid later. "It would be in your interests to register," said Mr. Hunt.

Defendant: Yes, I will do that. "Very well, the ease will be dismissed."
