RAILWAY MISHAP.
ACCIDENT TO BAIXAST TRAIN COLLIDES WITH SHUNTING ENGINE A railway mishap occurred near the Ellerslie station shortly before noon today. A ballast train was proceeding along the up-line when the couplings between a set of wagons carried away. The rear portion of the train commenced to run back towards the Ellerslie platform. The ballast train is not fitted with the Westinghouse brake, and the endeavours made by the guard in charge to pull it up with the hand-brake on the van failed. As a shunting engine was crossing over from one side of the Ellerslie. yard to the other, the detached portion of the ballast train collided with it, causing some damage. One truck on the ballast train was derailed and several others were knocked about. No delay was caused to traffic, and the running track was not damaged.
