RUSH BY NATIONS. Britain Gets Satisfaction Over Nanking Affair. TREATIES OF EQUALITY. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) SHANGHAI, August 22. As a result of the satisfactory settlement of the Nanking incident of March, 1927, Mr. William Hewlett, British Consul, is about to proceed to Nanking to take up his residence ashore for the first time in 17 months. The British Consular duties at Nanking since the incident have been carried out on board a warship anchored off that port. It is reported that Germany intends to transfer her Embassy from Peiping (Peking) to Nanking. She will be the first Western nation to recognise the Nationalists in this manner. There appears to be a scramble among the Powers to secure the special trade concessions promised by the Nationalists to the nations the Governments of which quickly revise the treaties on a basis of equality. Following closely on the heels of the conclusion of a new Sino-German commercial treaty, pledging equality of Customs treatment, it is reported that the Belgian Charge d'Affairs made a special journey to Nanking to discuss treaty revision. The Nationalist Foreign Minister and the Government of the United States have already concluded a new treaty. Portugal and Britain have expressed their willingness to follow suit. The Tokyo correspondent of the "Times" says that notwithstanding official Chinese statements to the effect that the rebellion in the Hulumpuir disitrict.
