PROTECTION OF ANIMALS.

BONELESS VEAL INDUSTRY. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening in the society's room, Dllworth Building, the chairman, Mr. L. fl. Rhodes, presiding. The inspector's report dealt with 36 cases. In 20 cases warnings were given and sixteen animals were humanely destroyed. A lengthy report by the inspector as to the handling of what is now known as "boneless veal calves" was received. Re stated that calves were now coming to the works in great numbers, as many as 3000 being received at the Horotiu works in one day. There appeared to be eases of overcrowding, as from 75 to 80 calves were being packed in an L.A. wagon. In some cases calves died on the Journey. The report was considered at length, and It was resolved to forward a letter to the Railway Department concerning the transport, and that a remit be framed to bring the question before the Dominion Conference.

A letter was received from the Devonport Borough Conncil in reply to a letter from the society, dealing with the inadequate number of water troughs in the borough, in which the society requested that a certain number of troughs which had been removed should be replaced. The council had agreed to accede to the request, and appreciation of the council's action was recorded.

An interim report was received from the sub-committee set up to consider the practicability of the erection of an animals' hospital In conjunction with the society. Definite detail of the scheme is not yet sufficiently advanced to enable the committee to consider the matter.

A lengthy letter was received from the conference secretary notifying the committee that the conference would be held in Wellington at an early date. Several remits were framed for consideration by the conference.

A letter was received from Whangaret members stating that a public meeting would be held on Tuesday, the 28th inst., to establish a branch of the society there. A cordial Invitation for representatives from tbe Auckland committee to attend the meeting was gladly accepted.
