MANGERE CLUB'S TOL'RNEV. RESULTS OK THE FINALS. The open championship of the Maneerp Badminton Club cinehuleil at Manirere Hall on Tuesday, when a highly interesting series of filial matches was player]. In the men's and ladies' singles the issue was most keenly contested. ?oing in each case to three sets. Kelly, of the Auckland Club, and Southon. a Napier player, fonsrht out the men's singles, in a fine exhibition of conrfastnijr styles. By steadiness and placing, Kelly, whose badminton was learned in Ireland. out-manoeuvred the headlong, hard-hitting So-uthon in the first and third sets ; but when the latter was right on his game in the second set it was a battle royal, the game being set back to 3 before Southon eventually won. 17—-14. Miss Solomon found Miss M. Macfarlane's tennis back-hand and placing experience a little too strong for her, but the younger player took the second set. Badminton court craft was strongly in evidence by E. Dart and C. Ellett, of Mangere. and Mrs. Dart and Miss Solomon, also of the local club, won the mixed doubles with comparative ease in two straight sets. The mixed duobles were also won in two sets. The results were :— Ladles' Singles.—Miss M. Macfarlane beat Miss Solomon. Men's Singles.—Kelly beat Southon. Ladies' Doubles.—Mrs. Dart and Miss Solomon beat Misses Macfarlane and Crait;. Mixed Doubles.—Kelly and Miss A. Ellett beat Southon and Miss Craig. Men's Doubles.—Dart and C. Ellett beat Kelly and Robieson. The cups won at the tournament were presented by Mr. House, the club's president. who voiced the district's appreciation of Mr. and Mrs. E. Dart, who had given them a game which was new to them i and most fascinating. In reply Mr. Dart j stated that he had promoted badminton in j several parts of the world, but he had ] rarely got so much pleasure from his: hobby as had been his experience in this j part of New Zealand. He was applying: to have the Mangere Club's open Cham- j pionshlp made the Northern Badminton , tournament. The New Zealand championship tournament will be held at Napier on September 5, 6 and 7, and Auckland district is expected to supply several championship candidates.
