"EXAGGERATED."
IRAN KLIN NATIVES HAPPY. "NO CASE OF REAL POVERTY." (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, this day. In consequence of some startling assertions made at last meeting of the Franklin County Council that there were several cases wher members of the native race were in desperate circumstances, were ill and starving, the chief native land purchase officer for the New Zealand Government, Mr. J. Thomson, accompanied by District Nurse Wallis, of Auckland, and the local health inspector, Mr. T. C. Thompson, visited the district and made exhaustive inquiries at all the pas in Patuniahoc, Aka Aka and Waipipi. Mr. J. Thomson later said he was glad to say that the statements were grossly exaggerated and that there was not one case of real poverty. He added that while the Maoris found it difficult at times to obtain work, they reecived sufficient employment to enable them to properly feed and reasonably clothe their dependents. He had investigated fully 30 individual cases and all appeared to be quite comfortable and happy.
