LEAGUE FOOTBALL

ENGLAND WINS.

VICTORY IN SECOND TEST. SPECTATORS WOT IMPRESSED. VISITING FORWARD ORDERED OFF. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUXEDIX, Saturday. The second League Test between England and New Zealand was played on the Caledonian Ground in glorious weather, before an attendance of 9000 people. The ground was in excellent order.

Five minutes after the commencement England were penalised 40 yards out and Dufty kicked an excellent goal. For "playing the man" on the ground Goodall was cautioned and Sullivan had a kick at goal, but it fell short. Shortly afterwards the blacks were penalised, and Sullivan equalised the scores. The play went up and down the field in a series of fast rushes. The tackling of both sides was very bad. The game was somewhat willing. Foolish dodging about by Wetherill let England away, but they were forced out at the corner. The handling by both teams was good, and players on each side showed a considerable turn of speed. The tackling was very hard. Prentice arid Bowen were cautioned for rough play. Deljrrosso was injured and had to be carried off.

The New Zealand forwards went through in a determined rush, but Fordsham picked up the ball and found the line. Brisbane then picked up the ball and cleverly evaded his opponents, and passed to Scott, who, although tackled, rolled over and scored. Dufty's kick hit the post.

New Zealand kept pressing, but a fast run by an Englishman put England in an attacking position. Burgess had a kick t.t goal in front of the posts, but the ball failed to rise sufficiently. The next incident was a brilliant run by Prentice to the line, but he was pushed out at the corn. 1 !. Immediately after, and just on halftime, Rees picked up the ball on the side line, sprinted up hard and scored. Sullivan converted. At half-time the score was:

England 7 New Zealand 5 After the resumption the game was marred by several unpleasant incidents. A violent encounter between Horton and Wetherill resulted in the former being cautioned, but the intervention of O'Brien saved him from being sent off. England next got away, and Fildes dribbled the ball over the line, but several men fell on it, and the referee ruled a force down. The Englishmen were not the only ones not playing the game. Horton had to leave the field, to be followed immediately after by J. O'Brien, who suffered an injury to his nose. Hutt was also hurt, but he continued to play after receiving attention. England then got away, and Brough started a passing rush which ended in Ellaby scoring in the corner. Sullivan's kick failed.

Following a dirty incident in the scrum Burgess was singled out bv a line umpire and ordered off, but he was bleeding freely from the nose. Several players were cautioned. Failure by two New Zealand players to tackle Bowman enabled him to score England's next try. Neither New Zealander made an attempt to get him. Sullivan's kick was just outside the posts.

England again swept down the field, but were penalised at New Zealand's twenty-five. The New Zealanders were penalised, and the ball went to the other twenty-live. There England were again penalised, and the game ended without further score.

England 1.3 New Zealand 3 The game was played in a spirit not seen in Dunedin in the memory of the present generation. At times it almost developed into a brawl. The spectators were far from being favourably impressed, and expressed their disgust in no uncertain manner. The exhibition will do the League code no good.
