The Associated Chambers of Commerce of India and Burma, representing nearly £1,000,000,000 capital, have sent a memorandum to the Simon Commission advocating full autonomy for the Indian provinces on the following conditions:— (1) That the central Government of India be strengthened as against the All-India Legislative Assembly. (2) That the central Government be given powers of intervention in the event of a breakdown of the constitution of the provinces. (3) That the second Chambers are to be increased in the provinces. (4) That there are adequate safeguards for the administration of the police. (5) That a clause be inserted in the new Government of India Act forbidding commercial discrimination in any form. BRITISH CARS. BIG IMPORTS TO MADRAS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 12. The number of cars and omnibuses imported into Madras by sea during the year shows a record increase of 34 per cent. While not many years ago practically every car in India was American, in Madras now nearly half of them are British. Britain is still unchallenged in the motor-cycle and cycle market. Imports of these have increased by 60 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.
