OBITUARY.

MISS JANE SMART.

One of the early settlers at Onehunga. Miss Jane Smart, died oil Sunday at the advanced age of 94 years. She had lived at Mount Smart Road for a long period. She came to New Zealand with her parents 85 years ago. and for some time lived at Taranaki before moving to Onehunga. Right up to the time of her death Miss Smart was blessed with good health.

LATE MR. G. F. CATER. j At the opening of the proceedings of ! the .Auckland Orphans Club on Saturday j evening the chairman. Mr. J. Stanton. | vice-president, referred to the shadow of sorrow that had been cast over the club by the death since the previous ineeting of their beloved conductor of the orchestra for the past 12 year*. Mr. George F. Cater. He had taken i.unmand of the orchestra at a critical jn'riod. and had achieved a brilliant success. The excellent standard attained by this combination was the subject of praise by visitors, and the widespread fame enjoyed by the club's orchestra was | mainly due to the work ajid enthusiasm •of Mr. Cater. This to him had been a ' labour of love, earning for him the deep affection of every member of the orchestra. A vote of sympathy to the widow and family was carried, the large assemblage standing and signifying assent br j an impressive silence.

The chairman intimated that Mr. Harold Baxter had kindly consented to , continue to fill the position of deputyconductor of the orchestra till the end of the session. A concert in the Town Hall was being organised in recognition of the late Mr. Cater's services and cominunitv work.

MR. JAMES HUTCHINSON. The death occurred at hi? resident* •jri Friday of Mr. James Hutchinson at the age ot 86. Mr. Hutchinson was born in December. IS4I, at Nottingham. England, and came in 1864 to Auckland where he engaged in engineering work. He met with an accident and upon recovering went in 1866 to ictoria. Australia. Here he entered the service of the Railway Department and rose to the position of an inspector. In the early 'nineties he retired and returned to New Zealand, residing at times at Whangarei and Paparoa. Througnout his life Mr. Hutchinson took a great interest in the affaire of the Baptist Church and was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternitv. He was married twice, his first wife dying shortly after their coming to New Zealand. He is survived by his second wife, whom he married in Melbourne, tour daughters and two son?. There Are ako 19 grandchildren and tnree greatgrandchildren. lor the past seven years Mr. Hutchinson has resided in Auckland.

MISS JANE SMART. Miss Jane Smart, who died at her resi* dence, Mount Smart Road, Onehunga, yesterday, *-as born in lt>34. She came out to Nev Zealand in the ehip Blenheim, arriving it Wellington in 1843 with her parent? went to Taranaki. They took up and under the New Zealand Government at Smart Road. The railway station there is called after the family. The family put in a lot of pioneering work until the outbreak of the Maori war. when they had to aban* don the farm and take refuge in New Plymouth. Mi?s Smart led an uneventful hfe and had possession of all b?r faculties until she died.

MR. JOHN WHARFE. One of the few remaining? pioneer set--1 tiers of Albert land. Mr. John Wharfi\ died on Saturday afternoon ai hi? home. Calliope Road. Devonport. in the 90:h year of his age. He arrived in Auckland in 1862 by the ship Matilda Wattenback. and went to North Albert land, where he remained until the nineties, when he moved to Tara. near Mangawai. Ten years ago Mr. Wharfe came to Devonport to spend the evening of his days with his two daughter?. In the early davs of settlement in the north, Mr. Wharfe had to face the hardships inseparable from pioneering. Mrs. Wharfe died in 1905. There were twelve children. The following survivp their parents: Messrs. William. Alfred.Henry. Fred and Charles Wharfe. and Mi*se s Ada and T "'v Wharfe. There are twenty grandchildren and several great-grand-r-hildren. Mr. Wharfe had been failing for the past eighteen months. He wa« an uncle of Mr. W. H. Wharfe. gum merchant of this citv.

MR. S. J. DRIVER. The death took place in Auckland of Mr. Samnel John Driver, who for many years was a well-known goldminer, having worked on the famous Caledonia at Thames. He was born in England 78 years-.ago. and arrived by the ship Victory on August 1, 1864.* After leaving Thames Mr. Driver was farming at Te Aroha for a number of years. He came to Auckland live IT years ago. Deceased is survived by four sons, three daughters and 27 grandchildren.

MRS. A. N. McKELVEY. Mrs. Muriel Grace McKelrev, wife of l>r. Alexander Niel McKrlvev, medical superintendent at the Auckland Infirmary, died on Friday, aped 49 rears. She was horn at Bangalore.
