AMUSEMENTS.

TOWN HALL CONCERTS

A capital programme of music was provided by Mr. Maughan Barnett for last Saturday evening's civic concert. The attendance of the public was somewhat disappointing and not commensurate with the extent of preparation made by the executants. The audience numbered about. 240. The municipal choir of 80 singers sang several concerted pieces in a finished style and were warmly acclaimed after each contribution. Dowland's madrigal. "Say, Love" was effectively treated, and the singing of Pearsall's '"Great God of Love" was notable for rich chording and clearness of the parts. Broughton's

"The Immortal Hour'' was sweetly given and Edgar's "O Wild West Wind" received a rendering adequately exhibiting its fine vocal writing. Tastefully delivered was Xorthcotc's "Dear Harp.'' and martially sang was Roberton's sotting of "Blue Bonnets." Cesar Franck's "O Praise Ye the Lord" received an inspiring performance, to which was added a suitable organ accompaniment bv Mr. K. Randal. Artistically interpreted by Miss Beatrice Elliott was Maseenei'g "II est doux."' Wagner's

"Eineam in truben Tagen." and La Forces' '"Song of the Open," the soprano being warmly encored after each solo. Mr. Maughan Barnett directed the concerted items and played in a capable manner organ solo* by Purcell, Boellmann. and Sibelius. Mr. L. Whittaker accompanied. In the Town Hall last night. Mr. Barnett cave the usual free organ recital, selecting his solos from the woiks of Bach. Rheinberg, Widor, Mendelssohn. Guilmant. and Morandi, all 01 which were attractively performed. "SCANDAL." Although "Scandal," which is to be r r eV ;. Ve^ re by - Nlr - Leon Gor don and the t,' \i ams ? n - Ltd.. dramatic company at His Majesty s Theatre to-morrow nijiht, has its brightly humorous moments, it is essentially not a farce. It is a penetrating character study of a certain tvpe of woman—the daughter of wealthv" parents who has grown up without any of those restraints which limited means naturallv impose °n an imperious mind, but instead has had to endure an artificial narrowing discipline which relatives have imposed nnJVT fl° r r own S°° d " and consequently flies to extremes when circumstances allow her to play an independent nand. Cosmo Hamilton works out the development of this character verv cleverly through the three act* of the ♦w : v w .® ald that Mr. Leon Gordon is at hK best in the role of Pelham Franklin. It is due to the brilliant acting of Mr. - r 4 r<? n and .Mis6 Collins that the revival j oi: Scandal*' has proved a crest success wherever it has been staged. The j furnishing, particularly- the bedroom scene, is a feature of the performance or j 'Scandal," the revival of which attract j record audiences in Wellington recently.
