DEVONPORT SHIELD. FIRST ROUND RESULTS. The first round of matches for the Devonport Shield were played at the Remuera hockey grounds on Saturday. Ten teams were engaged, made up of the competitors from the A and B championship grade. The play throughout was only of a moderate standard. The grounds were hard and fast, and the players felt the effect of them after the soft grounds throughout the season. Otahuhu accounted for North Shore by three goals to nil, but the latter were considerably handicapped owing to playing three men short through illness. University, a-fter a doubtful first spell, were seen to greater advantage in the second spell, when they accounted for the Soverville Colts by five goals to nil. Mount Eden, after a hard encounter with Training College emerged victors by four goals to two. Somerville got the best of Epiphany by three goals to one, while St. Luke's rung on five goals against the 'Varsity Colts' one.

SOMERVILLE V. EPIPHANY. This was one of the most stubbornly contested games of the day. For the first spell Epiphany had the champions thinking, but in the second half Somerville developed superiority after Winks had netted a goal for Epiphany, and Seccombe, H. Watts and C. Watts put on goals In quick succession. Somerville won, 3—l. MT. EDEN V. TRAINING COLLEGE. In the first spell Melklejohn scored for the College and Penman for Mt. Eden, but thereafter the game went strongly in favour of Mt. Eden. Ash (2), and Penman added goals, and in the concluding stages Jessup hit a goal for the College. The giLme ended 4—2 in favour of Mt. Eden. OTAHUHU V. NORTH SHORE. With Shore three men short, Otahuhu took the lead In the first spell, Jenkins and Cochran putting through a goal apiece to one scored by Rykers. Another goal was scored by Rykers in the second spell, but Just on time Gardiner scored for Otahuhu, who won 3—2. ST. LUKE'S V. UNIVERSITY COLTS. St. Luke's held too many guns for the whippets, and T. Giles, Steele and Bay got goals in the first half. A better defence was offered by the students in the second half. J. and T. Giles added goals for St. Luke's, while Taylor scored for University, who were defeated, s—l. UNIVERSITY V. SOMERVILLE COLTS Somerville Colts fared poorly at the hands of University, who kept up an incessant attack throughout the game. Don netted three times, and Sealen and Hamilton trot a goal each. University winning by 5 goals to 0. JUNIOR RESULTS. THIRD GRADE. Grammar B 6, beat University B 1. FOURTH GRADE. Grammar 1, beat Somerville 0. Otahuhu 2, beat St. Luke's 1. LADIES' GAMES.

HOCKEY SHIELD. AUCKLAND TEAM. The following team has been selected by Mr. W. Newsham to defend the Shield against Wellington at Remuera next Saturday afternoon. Changes have been made in the personnel of the team, while three have been made in the positions. Turnbull. of Whakatane, has been put at centre-half. Cole shifted .to his old position at right-half, while Kankin replaces Nighfield in goal. Goal, Raskin (North Shore) ; full-backs, Williams (St. Luke's), Gardiner (Somerville) ; halves, Cole (Soinerville), Turnbull (Whakatane).
