DAY OF MOURNING.
FOR AUCKLAND'S SINS.
SALVATION" ARMY MOVEMENT
Appropriate musical selections will be played by the Auckland Salvation Army Band 011 Fridav, August 31, when a day of mourning for the sins of Auckland will be held. The dav is part of a comprehensive programme of services arranged by the Salvation Army in connection with the opening of the new Congress Hall in Grey's Avenue on Augu.-t 25. A procession from Queen's wharf to the new hall will start at S p.m. cm the mourning day. and Commissioner James Hay. head c>f the Armv in New Zealand, will deliver an address on "The Damning Sins of Auckland."'
Such a demonstration was held in Wellington about a year ago. said Major A. .T. Miles, secretary of divisional headquarters at Auckland, in explaining the nature of the procession. That it had caused widespread interest had been definitely proved by the fact that thousands of people turned out to watch it. Friday evening has been chosen for the Auckland procession, he said, because Queen Street was always crowded on this night, and many people who would otherwise take no interest would have the opportunity of witnessing it. It was hoped that the procession would help to awaken the people of Auckland from their lethargy in respect of their dutv towards God.
When questioned in regard to Auckland's chief sins. Major Miles said that he could not. refer to them: they formed the basis of the address which Commissioner Hay would deliver. He pointed out, however, that Commissioner Hay was recognised as a speaker who never exaggerated in an effort to create a stir, and an address by him on such a subject would be of great value.
The other services to be held in connection with the opening of the hall are. the opening ceremony, to be performed by the Governor-General. Sir Charles Fergiisson on Saturday, August. 2r>, a special series of services on the following Sunday, ancF a number of meetings lasting until Sunday, September 16. Besides Commissioner and Mrs. Hay. there will be many prominent Army officers in Auckland, and 45 cadets from the South will be here for a month to assist in the services.
