GISBORNE MEETING.

PROGRAMME FOR OPENING DAY.

THE FIELDS REVIEWED. The winter meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club will open at Gisborne tomorrow, and the fields engaged in the various events are the best that have been seen in this district for some time past, for in two instances—the Maiden Race and the Hack Flat Handicap—there will have to be a division. In the Park Hurdles Ballyfarnon, who is at the top of the handicap, has run well over the "sticks" this season, and he is sure to be in request. Royal Heather has shown jumping ability this season, but his recent efforts have been confined to steeplecliasing. Comedy Prince put up a good performance at the summer meetings in Gisborne in February last, winning three out of four hurdle races and finishing second in the other two. Rahepoto was third to Kauri Park and Potoanui in a hurdle event at the Te Kuiti meeting at Ellerslie recently. Master Arch may be the best of the others. The best supported may be Ballyfarnon, Rahepoto and Comedy Prince. The Maiden Race will be run in two divisions, and Dishonoured, after being placed in his only three starts this season, will be favourite, while Abisogne uaav be next in request. Eleven are carded for the Flying Handicap. Huikai raced well at the Hawke's Bay meeting, finishing second to Kaiti on the first day and winning on the second. Dave is a good sprinter, and even with 10.0 should give a good account of himself. Jeanette won a double at the Wairoa meeting, and on her last appearanace at the Hawke's Bay autumn meeting she scored over six furlongs and finished second to Kaiti in a similar event on the second day. Cool Card usually races well at Gisborne, while Fee Simple has recent form to commend him. Superb King may bo the best of the others. The most fancied may be Dave, Huikai and Fee Simple. Highway heads the list in the Gisborne Steeplechase, and as he is a pretty good jumper he will command support. Garzon, from the same stable, won the event last year, and recently finished second in the Napier and Hawke's Bay Steeplechases, but he was a long way behind the winner, Mixed Heather, in the latter event. However, he should go well on his own course. Bahadur, with a bit of luck, will have to be reckoned with, for he has plenty of pace and can jump. Garzon and Bahadur will probably carry most money. The Hack Flat Handicap will also be run in divisions. In the first Singleton is top weight, and he can be expected to do better than he has recently. At the beginning of the season lie showed good form, and if at his best would be hard to dispose of. Dreamy is a likely sort, for in her last three starts she has won one race and finished second on two rsther occasions. Royal Elm won at the Hawke's Bay meeting in the autumn, while Rapiata and Cherry Girl may find most favour of the others. Dreamy and Singleton may have most support. In the second division Essential, after winning at Napier Park recently, will have friends. Takutama performed well at meetings on the coast in the summer and autumn, while Blue Jay won one event and finished second in another out of three starts last season. Tea Lady was placed in a couple of races at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting in the spring. Probably Essential and Takutama may command most respect. [ Royal Heather has pride of place in the I Tramway Steeplechase, and if reserved for this race instead of the Park Hurdles is sure .to go well. Handy showed good form early in the season, when he won the Hunt Club Steeples at Poverty Bay and Marton, and was third in a similar event at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt , meeting. Rahepoto and Bahadur have engegements earlier in the day, but if "started in this event are likely to be in the money. Perhaps Handy, Bahadur and Rahepoto may be the chief fancies. Patuki won at Wellington, and is likely to be favourite for the Winter Oats, while Princess Ronnie and No j Favours may be next best backed. I The programme is as follows:-^-
