An ordinary meeting of the Xc-v L.\ nn Town Board was he'd last evrninz. In the abscnce of the ch.i:iman (Mr. W . L. Titchenei) through ii'r.cs-. Mr. 1. Hughe# presided, other members present being: Messrs. C. E. H. I'utt. IJ. I'. Ward, A. S. Akehuis;. and J. A. Fielding. Condolence. —The chairman moved a morion o; sympathy and a letter of condolence be sent to the widow and family of the late Mr. Howard J. Ellis, until recently headmaster of the local school and a widely respected citizen. Foreman's Report.--The foreman reported on the completion of six mile* of nei\" footpaths in the district. Improvements to Matai Avenue and Titirangi Road were in progress. It w;is suggested that all bicycles in the district should be registered, as persons riding on the lootpaths often refused to give their names. The board adopted the report. Buildings.—The inspector reported that five permits had been issued during the past fortnight, and six dwellings were in course of erection. Municipal Corporation Bill.—Mr. H. G. R. Mason, M.P., forwarded a copy of the above bill and referred specially to clause 9. which recently was the subject of a petition to the board. The clause reads: "Where in any borough land of an area of not less than three acres is occupied for farming purposes, and is, in th« opinion of the council, not fit for subdivision for building purposes, or not likely to be required within a reasonable period for building purposes and the council passes a resolution to that effect, the aluer-General shall (if he agrees with the decision of the council that the land is not fit for subdivision or not likely to be required within any reasonable period for building purposes as aforesaid) make reductions in the assessment of the capital value and of the unimproved value of such land, and any of the eeveral interests therein, to the extent by which, in bis opinion, such value is reduced by reason of the purposes to which such land w applied." The board decided to give the bill careful consideration. Public Telephone.—The Poet and Telegraph Department wrote, in reply to the board, that tha estimated deficiency in respect to the installation of a public telephone would be £50 per year. If the board was prepared to subsidise the installation to this amount the matter would be referred to the head office for further consideration. The board was not satisfied with the reply received, and will communicate further with the Department, desiring to know why the deficiency should be so much in excess of the annual cost of a direct 'phone to the city. Portage Road.—The Works Committee recommended that improved lighting be provided at the junction of Links Road as soon as possible. Agreed to. Expenditure on Works.—The chairman of the Works Committee (Mr. Putt) reported on the expenditure on works from. April 1 to the middle of July:—Xew footpaths: Expenditure £158 17/8, allocation £280, unexpended balance £121 2/4; maintenance of footpaths: £83 15/, allocation £110, balance £26 s'; road maintenance: £451 17/5, allocation £1446. unexpended balance £994 2/7. A total length of 233 chains of paths had been reformed and re-surfaced at a unit cost of 7/2 per chain. A total length of 641 chains of metalled carriageway had received attention, at an average cost of 14/1 per chain. The cost of maintenance in respect t« Totara Avenue, from the railway to the Great North Road, had already reached £3 16/ per chain.
