NEW COAL MINE.
WORK NEAR TE KUITI. LARGE SEAM LOCATED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, this day. After considerable difficulty and delay a lease has been secured by a local syndicate of the Rangitoto coal deposits, with the result that mining is being carried on and local coal sold in the town. The coal is of excellent quality. The presence of gum interspersed freely in tha layers of coal indicate that at one time a kauii forest must have existed so far south ae this spot. Three months prospecting and driving have resulted in a large seam being located and operations on a more extensive scale will be carried on. The benefit to the town of Te Kuiti in increased trade and employment, to say nothing of cheaper fuel, will be appreciated.
