THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

CALF TRADE FIGURES. Interesting figures relative to the threeday calf trade were given by Mr. J. G. Brechin, at a recent meeting at Pahiatua. Freezing works, he said, would require a minimum of 20,000 calves —• which the Pahiatua-Featherston area could supply. A pooling scheme was absolutely essential in order to guarantee the minimum to the freezing companies. There were active inquiries for the product of the incoming season. Best results would be got by uniting the whole of the North and South Islands in one big pooling scheme. He quoted figures demonstrating the possibilities of the industry, it being shown incidentally that of the total number of dairy cows in the Dominion the North Island percentage was 75.55. If the Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, and Auckland provinces ! got the scheme under way • l>e "200.000 calves in the pool. With .'OO.OOO calves they could be handled at a minimum cost. Without the pooling system the bones of the calves could not be adequately dealt with, but with the scheme in operation a gelatine factory could be built, and it would prove one of the most profit-earning concerns ever established in New Zealand.
