RECORD DOWNPOUR.
TWENTY INCHES OF RAIN.
IN WAIHI SINCE SATURDAY. WORK SUSPENDED AT MINE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. Nearly 20 inches of rain has fallen in Waihi since Saturday. A fall of no less than 7.15 inches was registered last night. It was the greatest downpour on record. Except that the low-lying areas are flooded, little damage has been done. In th© east end, Hood water swept over the road, and entered one residence. The excess of water has blocked many culverts and channels. Temporary interference was caused to the gas supply in some parts of the town, owing to water entering the pipes, but this was soon remedied. The weather showed signs of a change for the better this morning. Work at the Waihi Company's mine was temporarily suspended this morning. As a large amount of water had entered the underground workings bv way of the surface, it was not considered safe to lower the men down Nos. 2 and 5 shafts. The day shift men returned home, hut it is understood the stoppage of work will be brief.
