WAIKATO RIVER RISING.
FARMERS ANTICIPATING FLOOD. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) MERCER, this day. Three days of incessant heavy rain is having its due effect upon the Waikato River, which has suddenly swollen to flood dimensions and is rising rapidly. It rosw nearly eighteen inches during the night and this is stated to be one of the biggest rises recorded in such a short time for nearly 20 years. Motor traffic is not likely to he seriously affected, the load behind the railway station having been raised above the average flood level for the greater part of its length. It is possible that some inconvenience may occur later between the railway station and the township. where the road work is still incomplete. Ihe ri\er to-day is much discoloured and the rising waters are invading the flats in all directions. In anticipation of a big flood, sheer and cattle are being removed to hi<diei country. c Reports from the Maungatawhir \ alley state that there is heavy floodinc there, horses being necessary to tow cars through.
