ASKED FOR A CHANCE.
BUT HE WAS TOO LATE. !
CARNEY SENT TO GAOL.
Guy Carney's request for another chance so that he could leave town and seek employment in the country was rather belated when he made it at the Police Court this morning.
Carney (25), an American seaman, appeared for sentence on charges of assault, theft of clothing valued at £6 and breach of probation. The probation officer, Mr. Campbell, said that Carney was admitted to probation on August 19 last year oti a charge of theft. He had done no good while on probation and had only made a fool of it. Mr. Campbell asked that Carney should now be sentenced on the original charge of theft. The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean,
S.M., told Carney that he had had hia chance, but had not availed himself of it. Carney was convicted and ordered to pay for a new set of false teeth to the man he had assaulted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each of the other two charges. The sentences are to be cumulative—a total of six months in gaol.
