FARMING INDUSTRY.

THE GOVERNOR'S INTEREST. IMPORTANCE OF "SIDELINES" ADDRESS TO CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Dominion conference of the Farmers' Union was addressed by the Governor. He said he had travelled over many parts of New Zealand and become acquainted with the conditions of farming, and therefore he felt more at home in addressing the conference. He was not there to teach them anything, but to show by his presence the inteiest he took in the improved prosperity of the country. His Excellency referred to the importance of primary industries, and he was glad to know the primary object of the union was to improve methods in production, and not to dabble in politics. He imagined the conference would carry on its discussions along three main lines: (1) Improvements iri farming methods; (2) reduction of costs (including co-operation) and methods of buying and selling; (3) development of markets. Advertising was of the utmost importance and there was room for expansion. He strongly advocated giving attention to pig-raising and bacon curing, and also to other "'sidelines" in farming, to provide against the bad times that must come from time to time. Mentioning fruit and tobacco, he dwelt on the subject of science in its relation to the farm, and spoke of the research being carried on at Cawthron Institute. He apologised for not being able to entertain the delegates this year, owing to other engagements.
