BOXING.

H. CASEY BEATS J. CARROLL. AX UNPOPULAR DECISION. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Monday. end o£ fifteen rounds Harry Casey, middleweight champion o£ Xeirfcealand. given the decision over Jack Carroll, welterweight champion of Australia. The decision met with a hostile demonstration from a large section of the spectators. "I n *11 my thirty years' experience of the New Zealand ring as a boxer and as a referee," declared ilr. A. C. RusselL of Wiipukurau, "I have never seen a worse decision under our New Zealand rules. Carroll won handsomely, scoring freely with his left, and was quite unconcerned about the face or body at close range. Casey was far too slow, and few of his blows were scorinr ones.'' There are many competent ringside judges, however, who will disagree with Mr. Russell, for, when everything is taken into consideration. Casey appeared a shade ahead on points. He made the fight and kept on top of his man all the way. Carroll was the better boxer of the pair and was very persistent with a lance-like left, but Casey, because of his crouch and body sway, was an elusiv* target. Casey was always ready to rnix it, but it was seldom that Carroll uncovered and cut loose. When the pair did stand toe to toe the crowd got plenty of thrill*. In the fifth round Casey swung a right that started noiselessly but ended like a crash of thunder, and Carroll dropped like a ninepin- He was up again after a couple of seconds and seemed out on his feet when th« gong sounded. In the next round he was very cautious, but recovered well in th« ninth. Carroll was again in trouble as the result of his inability to block Casey's heavy body punches, but he again demonstrated toughness and gameness. The Australian always kept his left hand in action. In the final round Casey chased his man round the ring trying to land a "killer." but Carroll fought back strongly. Briefly, it was a contest between a boxer and fighter, and the aggressiveness of the fighter won for nim the day.
