LAND AGENTS.

ARE THEY NEEDED? There are 1200 laud agents in the Dominion. and it is high time they wore banded together, and something done on their behalf. This was the statement made by "Mr. H. J. Dingan, president of the New Zealand Real Estate institute, at a valedictory social held in Christehurvh last week. Mr. Dingan said that following the withdrawal of the audit regulations, .statements had appeared that there was likely t > be a new Band Agents Hill introduced / ■■■•'g the present session. He did not tliTnl. i: likely that a bill would be introduced. But if a', bill were introduced a strong delegation representing the institute would wait upon the Government and submit limits, agreed to at the Institute's yearly conferences, with the object ot getting a bill that would be workable and more acceptable to laud agents. There were certain sections in the existing Act that were inimical and in opposition to the best interests of land agents. Air. Holland, the Leader of the Opposition and of the Labour party, had said ill a recent that it the Labour party got into power they would do away with land agents, and that all sales arid exchanges of land would be done through a Government department, that would be set up. Mr.. Holland w;ih entitled to his opinion, but he (the speaker) thought it was very unlikely that anything of the sort would happen. The great volume of business transacted by land agents throughout the Dominion was evidence of the great demand that existed for their services. He knew that they gave the public a very special service, and they could take it. lie thought, that the publie appreciated that service. It was unlikely that the State could give the service that land agents gave. Ihe institute aimed at purging land agency of the undesirables—the incompetent, and the dishonourables. (Hear, hear.) They did not wish to make land agency a close corporation, and did not want to keep out any competent man.
