UNAUTHORISED TRAVELLERS.

TWO VENTURESOME PUPS. "SHANGHAIED OR STOWAWAYS!" "Are they stowaways or have they been shanghaied?" is the question the police are asking concerning two unauthorised passengers by the Union Company's steamer Kartigi, which arrived yesterday afternoon from Picton. Being only fox terriers, though admittedly intelligent specimens of their class, the two "passengers" are unable to answer for themselves, and are consequently detained in the Queen's wharf police station until the mystery of their antecedents has been cleared up. The two bright pups, only a few months old, are providing the constables with amusement and the detectives with work. They are just at that "silly stage" that attacks men and animals alike, when sham fights are their delight and the destruction of everything they can reach a duty. Hence, after a morning's liberty, during which they tore up several newspapers, pulled tufts out of the mat, and slid on their stomachs all over the smooth linoleum, they were consigned to the "cooler," which, having been designed to hold obstreperous sailors, will probably resist their onslaughts. How or why the two youngsters came to join the Kartigi is a mystery. Either they have been bitten by the wanderlust that so often attacks adventurous youth, or else they have been the victims of a "shanghai-ing" plot. The crew of the Kartigi to a man deny all complicity in the plot, and suggest that the pups, in search of amusement, "just came aboard." It was a fine trip, however, and the young "foxies" certainly look as if sea travel agreed with them. How their future behaviour will be affected by the petting and "spoiling" they have enjoyed time alone will tell.
