A BRIGHT PUBLICATION. INFORMATION FOR GARDENERS. A foretaste of the floral beauties of spring and summer time is provided by Yates' Garden Annual for 1928, a publication of 110 pages, with many superb illustrations in colour, and a fund of useful information for gardeners of every kind. The front page design consists of a vase of escholtzias, displaying rare delicacy and vivid colour effects. It proclaims the high tone which is maintained by the well-known firm of Arthur Yates and Co., Ltd.. a standard which rises higher with the passing years. Many descriptive touches accompany the illustrations, which deal with floral subjects, and with a wide range of products of the vegetable kingdom. The science of making and maintaining lawns—and in the right place a good lawn may be as effective as a flower patch—is demonstrated wfafi the aid of pictures of the beautiful lawns and course at Ellerslie. Among the glories of the garden which are most effectively represented are the popular Iceland poppies, such as are already making their bright presence felt in Auckland as harbingers of spring. The larkspurs, among the most effective annuals for garden display, are shown in a variety of brilliant hues. Clarkias, reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains, suggest great improvements in the cultivation of this flower, while helichrysums, the old-fashioned strawflowers, so favoured for winter bouquets, are also brilliantly illustrated. Much time and thought has obviously been spent in preparing the mass of useful information in relation to flowers, fruit and vegetables, which is set forth by this leading firm of seedsmen, and the publication well repays one for its perusal.
