GIRL IN THE BACKBLOCKS.
CARRIED ON A STRETCHER.
SEVEN MILES ON ROUGH ROAD,
7J HOURS JOURNEY TO HOSPITAL,

Olive A\ent, ageil 13, was accidentally shot by her brother, aged four, yesterday morning at Mangapurua, which is i-ituated in the Imckblocks about 34 miles from Itaetihi.
Mr. Tom West, father of the childten, was cleaning a pea-rifle in the kitchen, and put it on the table for a moment. While he was absent the boy flicked up the rifle, inserted a bullet and pulled the trigger.
The shot entered the girl, just below licr breast.
A doctor was summoned but he could not get within seven miles of the sufferer, owing to the bad state of the loads. The girl was then carried a distance of more than seven mile? along a rough road, uphill, on an lin-' provided stretcher, to reach the doctor. On the journey to Raetihi Hospital the car broke down, and another car «as requisitioned. The journey took from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The girl bore her suffering bravely, and to-day is progressing favourablv.' '
