NOTES FROM THE SOUTH.

HEAVY GOING LIKELY TO-MORROW

A BATCH OF BCRATCHINGS.

TRACKWORK AND FORM DISCUSSED (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Monday. Except that the temperature was mild, conditions for training work at Trentham this morning could hardly have been worse, rain falling in torrents on an already soaked track. Practically all the horses on the scene worked, but few were sent against the watch, and what ordinarily would have been an' interesting morning was very quiet. Catkin and Star Ranger did working gallops. Solgele and Fairy Herald galloped six furlongs together in 1.20, the last half in 555. They kept together all the way, and hit out well. Tuki, looking bright and well, did a couple of paring rounds on the sand. The heavy tracks that will now be expeiienced will not be in his favour. Brigadier Bill, Ruby Ring and Kilburn did solid work on the sand, coming home over the last six furlongs in 1.26. Comical (Mr. R. Russell) was much superior to Hangawera (C. Butler) and Mainspring (D. O'Connor) over the five steeplechase fences on the course proper. Comical, if anything, went better than he did on Saturday morning. Captain Sartq (A. S. Ellis) started with them, but fell heavily at the first fence—the sod wall; on being remounted he blundered and lost his rider at the second; tried again, he got over the next two, but his effort left a lot to be desired. Quincoma jumped a couple of hurdles, at a very slow pace. Roscrea was out doing pace work on the sand. Others .noticed doing similar tasks on the sand and grass were Kawini, Kin? Lu, Waltzer, Queen Arch, Aberfeldy, Pouri, Red Fuchsia, Peneus, Kalos, Grand National, Lady Gay, Panorama, Royal Damon, Panther, Historic, Radiate, Black Mint, Ring Boy, Ronaki, Passin' Through, Kauri Park, Nucleus, Gold Mint, Chiclcwhfat, Greyfinch, Teri, Carinthia, Meadow Lark, Taboo, Freeze Out, and Revel. Oraflamb (E. Shaw) gave an indefferent exhibition over four steeplechase fences, blundering and losing his rider at the first of the obstacles. As lie has schooled well at Riccarton his d ! splay was rather surprising, but Riccarton track watchers generally do not regard him as a good proposition for the jumping. game. Comical increased his admirer? for the Wellington Steeplechase by his display in schooling. There is no doubt he has done really well since coming to Trentham, but fences is not a three mil* anda-quarter journey. iLCteyle has arrived with Vexatious and Inflame. The race track at Trentham rill be very heavy. It hf s had continuous rain falling on it since Saturday night, and yesterday - water was lying in pools. i Trentham ia much better drained than it used to be, and the water gets away q''*ckly now, but it ia impossible for it
