SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Birkenhead Labour party held their weekly whist drive on Saturday night in the Victoria Hall, Birkenhead. They had a very successful evening despite the unfavourable weather. The prize-winners were:—Ladies: Mrs. Watson, 1; Mrs. Williams, 2; Mrs. Reid, 3. Gentlemen: Mr. Brown, 1; Mr. Couch, 2; Mr. Buckworth, 3. • • • • Mrs. Lindsay, of O'Rorke Street, who is president of the City Mothers' League, entertained the committee at afternoon tea last Friday. The secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Wainwright, and the committee, consisting of Mrs. Passmore, Mrs. H. Elliott, Mrs. West, Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Webster, Mrs. McGruar, Mrs. Tewsley, Mrs. Reid, Mrs. Wilson, and Miss Garrie, concluded the arrangements for a musical entertainment and afternoon tea, which will be held at Myers Kindergarten, Upper Queen Street. • • » • At the last meeting of the New Zealand League of Penwoman the club's third birthday was celebrated. A feature of the afternoon was the presentation to Mrs. A. Stuart-Boyd, after three, years' presidency, of a pair of handsome book-ends and an inkstand made in pewter. During the afternoon music was played by the trio, Miss Halpin, Miss Sheppley, and Miss Craig, and a song especially written for the birthday by Mrs. Dunnington was sung by Mrs. Nello Porter. At the end of the afternoon a lucky pebble was given to each guest by Mrs. Boyd.
