SPILLS IN THE SAIN. WINS TO WHITTEN AND HEALEY. Rain and a bitterly cold wind interfered with cyclists in Saturday's races. The results are as follow:— MANUKAC AMATEUR CLUB. 22-MILE OPEN HANDICAP. J. Whitten, lm 1 F. Taylor, 2m 30s 2 C. I. Gainsborough, lm 45s ............ 3 It. Foubister, lm 45s 4 Time and fastest, 61.1 2-5. Despite wretched weather conditions, 32 riders faced the starter in this event, and from the fall of the flag the winner was never in doubt. The wretched weather conditions no dorf>t interfered with many riders' chances, T)ut when all thingß are considered the placed men won very easily, the winner particularly. Over the first two laps the front markers appeared to have a good chance, but they tired over the last lap, and finished out of a place. Whitten, the winner, simply played with the opposition. W. Dwight, A. W. Pinker and S. Baird fell, but were not hurt. AUCKLAND CLUB. 20-MILE OPEN HANDICAP EVENT. N. Healey, 2m 30s 1 J. Henderson, 2m 30s 2 \V. Francis, 4m 3 Time, 58.27 1-5. Fastest time, S. Hayes, scratch, 54.17. In pouring rain fourteen riders faced Starter Tonkin, and out of that number six fell during the running of the race, owing to the slippery state of the roads. The winner, N. Healey, has now done the hat trick, winning three races on end. He only squeezed home by a few inches from the consistent pacer, J. Henderson, but it gave him the verdict. S. Hayes again demonstrated his staying powers by securing fastest time. WHAKATANE CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A keenly contested nine-mile cycle road race was held under the auspices of the Whakatane Cycling and Athletic Club last week. Mr. H. J. S. Johnson donated the first prize and Mr. A. J. Moore the second.. while Mr. S. Howard gave a prise for the fastest time. The result of the race wa's as follows: —J. Brodrick (lm), 1; M. Ruddick (2m 20s), 2; J. Thomas (2m 20s), 3; fastest time, R. Morse, 26m 15s.
