FRUIT PESTS.
SPECIAL FIGHTING FUND.
SUBSIDY FOR RESEARCH.
The necessity for research work being carried out to combat pests and diseases affecting the fruit industry has been emphasised at practicality every conference of fruitgrowers held in recent years. At the Auckland provincial conference of fruitgrowers held yesterday it was reported the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation had agreed to give a subsidy of £100 a year for two years in order to make possible the employment of a special assistant at the Cawtliron Institute. The Department of Agriculture and Cawthron Institute had given valuable assistance in the past, but there were two outstanding pests in the bronze bettle and the earwig, for which no control fc yet available. In addition to the subsidy of the Fruitgrowers' Federation, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had agreed to give a subsidy of £150 a year, and the money would be used to employ a special research assistant.. The two chief pests would receive special attention, as great expense would be saVed if some effective means of control could be discovered.
