WEALTHY MAN ARRESTED.
WIFE'S MAINTENANCE CLAIM.
AN EXTRAORDINARY PROCEEDING.

An elderly, well-dressed, respectablelooking man declared by Mr. Strang to I c wealthy, of very good standing and a Justice of the Peace, appeared under i.nest this morning charged with rttempting to leave his wife without providing adequate maintenance, by intending to leave New Zealand.
Senior Sergeant Sweeny explained that the man had been arrested on warrant from Pahiatua.
Mr. Strang commented upon what he described the "extraordinary proceedings" adopted in arresting his client. Defendant, he said, was separated from his wife, and a legal agreement was in force under which he paid her £4 10/ a week, and one unmarried daughter £2 a week. He had remitted these sums with unfailing regularity ever since the agreement was made. He held two j'ood first mortgaces of £4000 and £3800 lit also two unencumbered farms at Manawatu, an unencumbered shop in the main street at Dannevirke. He was quite at a loss to understand the present extraordinary procedings, and f°lt his position very acutely. Mr. Strang thought the root of the present proceeding's was a married daughter.
