TRADE COMMISSIONER'S STATEMENT.
"I intend to make investigations into the matter, and until I hear from the Canadian authorities what are the actual facts of the case I do not feel inclined to comment on the question of Mr. Hyde's alleged deportation," said Mr. C. M. Croft, Canadian Trade Commissioner. He was referring to the case of Mr. Francis Raymond Hyde, the young New Zealander, who was sent back from Canada on the Aorangi with a fractured spine. Regarding compensation, Mr. Croft explained liat the different provinces of Canada had their own laws concerning it, and very often no provision was made for compensation to farm labourers. Mr. Croft added that he felt sure that Hyde was not deported, but had been sent back to New Zealand amongst his friends as a kindness.
