Women Cooks For French
Army.
FEMINIST VICTORY
(United Service.) (Received 11.30 a.m.) PARIS, April 23.
Women cooks are replacing men in the French army, each cooking for 400, soldiers and doing two men cooks' work at a salary of £50 a year, besides dress and lodging allowance. They will be uniformed in a picturesque fashion, recalling the vivandieres of Napoleon's armies. Colonels of regiments must be satisfied that the cooks are moral and efficient. The decision is hailed as a feminist victory.
Vivandieres were women attached to the French armies, who were permitted to sell provisions to the troops. They generally wore a dress adapted from the uniform of the regiment they followed. The male vendor later took their placc.
