(British Official Wireless.) (Received 1 p.m.)
RUGBY, April 23.
Tho war betwren the Northern and Southern Chinese, in which the Southern advance began about a fortnight ago, is proceeding with varying fortune. ,The Southern progress for the time being seems to have been checked. Tsining, which, on April 17, was captured from Sun Chuan-fang, the Northern general, in an attack aimed at his flank by Feng Yu-hsiang, is now reported to be retaken. Feng is said to be withdrawing to the west, while Sun is expected to join up with the forces of Chang Chungchang on the Kishat front.
Heavy fighting is proceeding. The report that the Northerners have lost Taming is denied. They are within a few miles of Changtsd and claim to have made progress in the eastern Shansi.
